How to Develop a Growth Mindset

Growth Mindset- Believing everyone can change and grow through application and experience.

Fixed Mindset- Believes our talents and abilities are fixed.

Importance of the Growth Mindset

Why is the growth mindset so important? Before answering that question, ask yourself: How did your mindset form? Dweck's research shows that most mindsets were formed due to praising and labeling from your childhood teachers and parents (Jeffery,2024). Transitioning to middle school can be tough for anyone, let alone a student moving into a new country who doesn't speak the language fluently. Expectations in academics to perform and personal responsibility to navigate their new world are challenges they have never had before.

Even if they don't succeed at first, students with a growth mindset will keep working towards the goal set before them. They will look at challenges as learning opportunities and won't be discouraged by failure. They view learning as more of a positive experience rather than a task that needs to be completed. Cultivating and nurturing students to form a growth mindset allows them to develop resilience and a love of learning, which will carry over in many areas of life.

Growth Mindset in Four Steps

Step 1 - Learn to hear your fixed mindset “voice.”

Step 2 - Recognize that you have a choice

Step 3- Talk back to it with a growth mindset voice

Step 4- Take the growth mindset action

Learn to hear your fixed mindset voice. This voice can limit your ability to accomplish things that you feel are too hard and just want to give up. You must turn the volume down on this voice. Otherwise, you will stay stuck and stagnant.

Recognize that voice and realize you have a choice. It would be best to immediately shift gears into a more positive frame of mind. Remember that your brain is built to grow, change, and learn.

Talk back to it with a growth mindset voice. You must combat the fixed mindset voice with a growth mindset response when challenges arise. Drown out self-doubt and negative thoughts. Encourage yourself to take responsible risks and try new things that will push you to be better.

Give yourself grace. Add the words "yet "and "not yet" to your vocabulary.

Embrace the attitude that you can't do something "yet" because you're still learning. Continue to learn, seek constructive feedback, and surround yourself with growth-minded people.

Promoting the Growth Mindset

The growth mindset will be promoted at the beginning of a new activity or unit. I will incorporate it into my lesson plans and curriculum, showing motivating and inspirational videos. As a teacher, I changed my language from saying, " You are so smart!" to, " I can see you worked hard on this." This will promote success throughout the lesson. I will display growth mindset posters and anchor charts around the classroom in different languages to encourage my students daily.

Impact of the Growth Mindset

A growth mindset will give me self-motivation and a positive attitude to tackle challenges head-on. When becoming anxious or overwhelmed, you must shift your perspective to what is possible. Pushing through obstacles will only strengthen the brain. It is like training for a marathon: the more you exercise the brain, the more connections will be made.

The growth mindset has also influenced me to ask for help and be open to criticism. Although I am naturally an introvert, I must be willing to accept all types of feedback from colleagues, administration, and even my students to learn and develop my intelligence.
