Alternative Professional Learning Strategy
Connecting and Communicating My Ideas
As a certified ESL instructor, I am dedicated to enhancing the quality of education within my organization. To achieve this goal, I have developed a comprehensive Professional Learning (PL) strategy aimed at revolutionizing teacher development.
This innovative plan utilizes collaboration through e-portfolios to elevate student engagement, improve learning outcomes, and enhance English linguistic skills. By fostering active participation and peer collaboration, the new model provides targeted support to ensure that all educators, particularly those working with multilingual students, are well-equipped to create equitable and effective learning environments.
A key focus of this strategy is the transition from traditional "sit and get" PL methods to a more dynamic, engaging, and impactful approach. This model is grounded in the five key principles of effective professional learning as outlined by research (Gulamhussein, 2013). Importantly, this plan is not merely an addition to existing responsibilities for educators; it represents a fundamental shift in how we approach professional development, prioritizing meaningful engagement and growth for all teachers. Check out my call to action to explore in detail my reasons for change.

Productive Professional Learning Environment
The principles outlined in the Alternative PL Call to Action are necessary to promoting change in professional development practices. By adopting these principles and the alternative PL model, we can enhance teacher training and cultivate a culture of continuous improvement and innovation, ultimately benefiting students directly.
The 5 effective principals for professional learning strategy aims to empower educators to develop engaging interactive tools that improve student learning outcomes through immersive educational experiences. This approach aligns seamlessly with the innovation plan's objective of enhancing ESL students' learning and linguistic skills by integrating e-portfolios in the sheltered science classroom.

Comprehensive Strategy Overview
The innovation plan focuses on enhancing student engagement through the use of e-portfolios, and my restructuring of traditional professional development will provide teachers with the tools they need to implement these strategies in their classrooms. This approach aligns closely with the five key principles of effective Professional Learning (PL) and Alternative Professional Learning (Alternative PL) – Call to Action.

Addressing Audience Needs
This professional learning course is tailored for middle school ESL teachers in Alief Independent School District. It focuses on integrating e-portfolios into sheltered science classrooms. Educators will explore strategies to actively engage ESL students, promote collaboration, and enhance science comprehension through digital portfolios.
-
Pre-course surveys will evaluate participants' current skills, ESL classroom experience and goals, to aligning with the commitment to personalize and curate relevant professional learning.
-
Ongoing needs assessments ensure that we are addressing the evolving needs of educators, supporting our goal of adaptive and responsive PL.
-
Customized content tailored to each grade level and ESL linguistic level reflects the dedication to content-specific learning.
-
Flexible learning options of in-person or online will show the initiative of moving away from one-size-fits-all approaches to professional learning.
Fostering Collaboration and Effective Modeling
In response to the Call to Action for more engaging and effective professional learning , the following strategies will be implemented:
-
Establishing professional learning communities to promote ongoing collaboration among educators.
-
Holding regular PLC meetings for goal-setting and progress tracking to ensure sustained engagement.
-
Organizing peer review and feedback sessions to model the kind of active, collaborative learning that we aim to foster.
-
Creating online discussion forums and idea exchanges to extend learning beyond formal sessions.

Leadership and Facilitation
A diverse on campus team of experts will lead this initiative, displaying the changes called for in the Alternative - PL Call to Action:
-
Course Instructor: Khelia Olison Williams will manage the overall program design and models the transition from traditional to innovative professional learning techniques.
